The UP PADYAK PROJECT. Bike for UP. Bike for the Environment.

HomeThe UP PADYAK PROJECTMar 4, 2008
The UP Padyak Project aims to contribute to the University on its centennial celebration by responding to the threat of global warming and the environmental crisis. Started by members and alumni of the UP Mountaineers, the project advocates bicycling as means of transportation, which helps lessen dependence on fossil fuel-driven vehicles. It also aims to promote health and fitness in the UP Diliman campus community. The project makes bicycles available to students at a highly-affordable rate which will cover rent of an easy-rider bicycle, training clinics, access to bicycle racks and cable locks. Padyak bikes are reconditioned single-speed bikes with step-through frames intended not for speed but for safety, comfort, visibility and function. Utility baskets will be mounted on the handlebars where students can place their belongings. Specially-designed Padyak decorative disks carrying visual messages about energy conservation and saving the environment are mounted on the wheels for visibility. Various UP alumni artists offered their talent for free in making these designs.

Victoria! I love to ride with my bike... Saves a lot of money from gala within U.P...And helps me with my breathing... Feel the rush of the wind while riding... And beat Ikot to SC... Hehe...

Thanks for the rent... How much will the bike cost if I'm going to buy it? :)

Btw, peace, Ikot drivers... Save P7.00 and more... ^_^

Dear Pluto, The Padyak Project offers an alternative to UP students who wish to bike. It is not meant to marginalize the jeepneys. Many students will still ride jeeps and cars, or choose to walk.

But as environmental advocates, our wish is for one day, jeepneys will run on recycled vegetable oil, and for UP as an academic community to help solve the environmental crisis. We also dream that we will all be less affected by the uncertainty petroleum prices. Some of our supporters have expressed interest in helping motor vehicles convert to recycled or renewable energy, or link displaced drivers to environmental livelihood projects.
